Addiction Psychiatrists use a variety of methods to assess a patient’s mental health and substance use disorder, including physical exams, lab tests, mental health evaluations, and psychological assessments. They then develop an individualized treatment plan which may involve individual and group counseling, medications, and other forms of treatment.

In addition to assessing and treating patients, Addiction Psychiatrists may also conduct research or provide training and education to other medical professionals on substance use disorders and their treatment.

In order to become an Addiction Psychiatrist, one must complete a four-year medical degree (MD) followed by a three-year residency in psychiatry. After completing the residency, psychiatrists must pass the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) exam to become board-certified in addiction psychiatry. An Addiction Psychiatrist must also be licensed to practice medicine in their state.
