Athletic Trainers also provide guidance and support to athletes during their recovery process and coordinate with other healthcare professionals when necessary.
Responsibilities: Athletic Trainers are responsible for providing a safe and effective environment for athletes to participate in physical activity. They must be knowledgeable in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and nutrition, and be able to apply this knowledge to create individualized treatment plans. They must also be able to recognize and respond to injuries quickly and accurately.
Qualifications: Athletic Trainers must be certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC). This requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in athletic training or a related field and a passing score on the NATABOC certification exam. Athletic Trainers must also complete continuing education courses to maintain their certification.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 28,400 athletic trainers employed in the US as of 2019. The median salary for athletic trainers is $47,510 per year. About 64% of athletic trainers are male, and 36% are female. The majority of athletic trainers are between the ages of 25 and 44, and the majority have a bachelor's or master's degree in athletic training. The most common states for athletic trainers to be employed in are California, Texas, New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania.
