Athletic trainers work with athletes to help them prevent injuries and reach their peak performance. They use a variety of techniques, such as physical therapy and strength training, to help athletes stay in shape and perform at their best. Athletic trainers also provide emergency medical care and rehabilitation services to injured athletes.
An athletic trainer is a health care professional who specializes in providing preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers work in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, sports clinics, and professional sports organizations. Athletic trainers are responsible for helping athletes prevent, manage, and recover from injuries through activities such as stretching, taping, and providing therapeutic exercises. They also provide education on proper nutrition, exercise and lifestyle management.
Athletic trainers (ATs) are healthcare professionals who specialize in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of injuries and illnesses related to physical activity. Athletic trainers are integral members of the healthcare team, working with physicians, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals.
The primary role of an athletic trainer is to reduce the risk of injury, optimize performance, and provide rehabilitation to injured athletes. Athletic trainers are responsible for providing proper injury assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation to athletes. They are also responsible for creating and implementing preventative strategies, such as strength training programs and warm-up activities, to reduce the risk of injury. Athletic trainers also provide education and advice to athletes, coaches, and parents on injury prevention and nutrition.
In order to become an athletic trainer, individuals must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training or a related field. The degree program must be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Depending on the state, athletic trainers may need to be certified or licensed. Certification is typically obtained through the Board of Certification (BOC). Additionally, most employers require athletic trainers to have a valid CPR/AED certification.
According to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), there are currently more than 40,000 certified athletic trainers in the United States.
In terms of demographics, the majority of athletic trainers (72%) are male, and the majority (73%) are between the ages of 25 and 44.
In terms of education, the majority (80%) have a bachelor’s degree in athletic training or a related field. Another 16% have a master’s degree, and 4% have a doctorate.
In terms of employment, the majority of athletic trainers (85%) work in a college or university setting. Another 10% work in professional sports or corporate settings, and the remaining 5% work in other settings such as high schools, hospitals, or physical therapy offices.
