Bariatric surgeons are medical professionals who specialize in performing weight loss surgeries. These procedures, which are also known as bariatric surgery, can be either restrictive (such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) or malabsorptive (such as duodenal switch or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch). Bariatric surgeons are responsible for assessing a patient’s health and determining the best course of treatment. They must also be able to explain the risks and benefits of each procedure to their patients, as well as inform them of the potential side effects. Additionally, bariatric surgeons must be able to provide postoperative care, monitor the patient’s progress, and modify the treatment plan as needed.
Qualifications:
To become a bariatric surgeon, one must first obtain a medical degree. After completing medical school, they must complete a residency program in a relevant field such as general surgery. After completing their residency, they must obtain board certification in bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgeons must also have a valid medical license in the state where they practice.
According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, there are currently over 4,000 bariatric surgeons in the United States. The vast majority of these surgeons are male (84%) and the median age among them is 51. The most predominant specialty among bariatric surgeons is general surgery (60%); however, other specialties such as internal medicine (25%) and plastic surgery (15%) are represented as well.
In terms of geographic distribution, the majority of bariatric surgeons are located in the south (48%) and west (21%) regions of the United States. The states with the highest concentration of bariatric surgeons are California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania.
Finally, the average salary of a bariatric surgeon in the United States is approximately $425,000. However, the salary range varies greatly depending on the specialty, experience, and geographic region.
