The surgeon should also have a strong understanding of dietary and lifestyle modification to help patients achieve lasting results.
The most recent survey of bariatric surgeon demographics in the US was conducted by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) in 2018. According to the survey, there were 7,700 bariatric surgeons in the US, of which 80.3% were male, 19.7% were female, and 0.1% were non-binary. Of these surgeons, 95.6% were board-certified, and the average age was 50.8 years. The survey also found that 99.9% of bariatric surgeons were in private practice, and 0.1% were in academic medicine. The majority of surgeons (84.7%) were affiliated with a hospital system, while 15.3% were in independent practice.
