A geriatrician is a physician who specializes in the care of older adults. They focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating illnesses and conditions associated with aging. Geriatricians work to improve the quality of life of their patients through disease management, lifestyle modifications, and coordination of care with other providers.
A geriatrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of elderly people. Geriatricians are trained to understand and treat the physical, mental, and social needs of seniors. They diagnose and treat age-related conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, incontinence, arthritis, osteoporosis, and more. They also provide preventive care and help with health maintenance.
Roles: Geriatricians specialize in the health care of older adults. They provide preventive care, management of chronic illnesses, and treatment of acute illnesses. They also provide care coordination, education, and support for families and caregivers.
Responsibilities: Geriatricians are responsible for assessing the physical, psychological, and social needs of their elderly patients. They must develop treatment plans and coordinate care with other health care providers. They must also monitor their patients for changes in health status and provide patient education.
Qualifications: To become a geriatrician, one must complete a medical degree and complete a three-year residency program in geriatrics. After completing the residency, geriatricians must pass the American Board of Internal Medicine certification exam. In addition, geriatricians must stay up to date on the latest advances in geriatric medicine.
According to the American Geriatrics Society, as of 2020 there were approximately 15,000 geriatricians in the United States. Of this number, about 11,000 are board-certified geriatricians. The average age of geriatricians is approximately 48 years old.
The majority of geriatricians are women (68%), and the average experience of practicing geriatrics is 13 years. The majority of geriatricians (78%) practice in an ambulatory setting, while 12% practice in a hospital setting, 4% in long-term care, and 6% in other settings.
In terms of race and ethnicity, 38% of geriatricians are White, 16% are Black or African-American, 16% are Asian, and 30% are of other or multiple racial/ethnic backgrounds.
The majority of geriatricians (82%) practice in urban areas, and the remaining 18% practice in rural areas. The average geriatrician earns an annual salary of $206,000.
