A hand surgeon is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders and injuries of the hand, wrist, and elbow. Their expertise includes reconstructive, microvascular, and trauma surgery of the hand, wrist, and elbow, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of other conditions that affect the hand, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
A hand surgeon is a surgeon who specializes in treating diseases and injuries of the hand, wrist, and forearm. This type of surgeon is specially trained in the anatomy and physiology of the hand, and typically uses a combination of surgical and non-surgical treatments to help restore the hand to its optimal functionality. Hand surgeons may perform common procedures such as carpal tunnel release, fracture repair, tendon repair, joint replacement, and nerve decompression, and may also treat serious conditions such as nerve entrapment, arthritis, and tendonitis.
A hand surgeon is a specialist doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the hand, wrist, and forearm. They must have a medical degree, plus have completed a special residency program in hand surgery.
Roles and responsibilities of a hand surgeon include diagnosing and treating hand injuries and conditions, performing surgery, and providing physical and occupational therapy. They must be able to assess and diagnose any problems with the hand and diagnose any underlying conditions. They must also be knowledgeable and experienced in the use of medical equipment and instruments, and have the ability to provide patient education and support.
Qualifications for this role usually include a medical degree, a post-graduate residency in hand surgery and a fellowship in hand surgery. Most hand surgeons will have a certification in hand surgery from a recognized specialty board. In addition, they must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work with a variety of medical professionals and be familiar with the most up-to-date techniques and technologies.
According to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), there are approximately 6,400 board-certified hand surgeons in the US. The majority of these surgeons are male (84%), and the average age is 47 years old. The majority of hand surgeons are located in the South and West regions of the US. Approximately 54% of hand surgeons practice in private practice, while 31% practice in academic settings, and 15% practice in institutional settings. The majority of hand surgeons (72%) are members of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH).
