• Referring patients to a specialist, such as an oncologist or hematopathologist, if necessary
• Educating patients and their families on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of their condition
• Keeping up to date with the latest treatments and research in the field of hematology
In order to be a hematologist, one must complete a four-year medical school program and then pursue a three-year fellowship in hematology. During the fellowship, the aspiring hematologist will have the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. After completing the fellowship, the individual must become certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
According to the American Society of Hematology (ASH) and the American Medical Association (AMA), there are approximately 11,000 hematologists in the US. Around 63% of them are male and 37% are female. The median age of hematologists is 47.5 years. The majority of hematologists (74%) are board certified in Medical Oncology, while a smaller number (26%) are board certified in Internal Medicine/Hematology/Oncology. The average annual salary for a hematologist is $252,947.
