Qualifications: Infectious disease specialists typically hold a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and must be licensed to practice in the state where they work. They must also complete a three-year residency program and a two-year fellowship in infectious diseases. In addition, many infectious disease specialists choose to become board certified in the specialty.
As of 2020, there are approximately 8,000 infectious disease specialists practicing in the United States. Most infectious disease specialists are male (76%), and the mean age of infectious disease specialists is 50.6 years old. The majority of infectious disease specialists are white (81.1%), followed by Asian (10.2%), African American (4.4%), and Hispanic (3.3%). Most infectious disease specialists are based in large metropolitan areas, with the largest concentration being in California, New York, and Texas. The median annual salary for infectious disease specialists is $263,000.
