Interventional cardiologists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases. Interventional cardiologists perform procedures such as angioplasty (a balloon-tipped catheter used to open blocked arteries), stenting (a metal mesh that holds open clogged arteries), and ablating (burning out) plaque with lasers and ionizing radiation.
The field has grown rapidly since its inception in the 1970s, when it was known as cardiac catheterization or angiography. In recent years, interventional catheterization has been given new names such as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA).
Traditional cardiology is a more conservative approach to treating heart conditions. It involves more invasive procedures and treatments, such as bypass surgery or angioplasty. Interventional cardiology is an aggressive form of traditional cardiology that allows for less invasive procedures and treatments.
Interventional cardiologists are able to perform many types of intra-arterial interventions (IAs) inside the arteries themselves rather than through veins like in traditional cardiac catheterization labs where they would need an open incision in order for doctors to insert a device into the vein(s). This reduces risk factors associated with open surgery such as bleeding, infection, pain and re-bleeding which can cause long term problems if left untreated.
