The majority of neonatologists are male (74%) and the average age of practicing neonatologists is 48. The median annual salary for neonatologists is $225,000; this salary is higher than the median salary for all pediatricians. The majority of neonatologists (64%) work in hospitals, while 22% work in private practices. Most neonatologists have completed a 3-year fellowship in neonatology, and many have completed additional training in a subspecialty such as cardiology, pulmonology, or developmental medicine.
