What is Neonatology
Neonatology is a specialty that focuses on the care of newborns and infants, from prenatal to one year postnatal. Neonatal specialists provide critical services, including diagnostic testing and treatment for conditions like birth defects, myelomeningocele (a spinal cord defect), acute brain injury, sepsis, bacterial pneumonia and others. A neonatologist provides care for premature babies (less than 32 weeks gestation) as well as those born preterm due to medical complications such as drug overdose or traumatic injury such as car accidents or falls.
The Role of Neonatology in Modern Medicine
The role of neonatology in modern medicine is similar to that of pediatricians, who specialize in the care of newborns, infants and children. However, neonatologists are also known as pediatricians.
Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are units designed for the treatment of very sick or injured newborns. They often have special equipment such as incubators so that premature babies can be kept warm until they can get home safely after birth.
What Does A Career In Neonatology Look Like?
Neonatologists are doctors who specialize in the care of newborn babies and infants. They’re called on to care for premature babies, sick babies and infants with birth defects. Neonatology doctorates are awarded by medical schools that offer this specialty, such as Harvard University or Yale University.
In addition to treating patients with birth defects or other health issues at birth, neonatologists may oversee the care of extremely premature children whose bodies aren't ready for life outside the womb (congenital). This can mean monitoring their growth rates; giving them medication; performing tests that measure their body temperature; measuring blood pressure and heart rate; providing nutrition through tube feeds (if needed), etc..
How To Become A Neonatologist
To become a neonatologist, you’ll need to:
Graduate from a medical school. Most medical schools offer an integrated bachelor's degree program that includes both pre-med and pre-clinical classes, which are required for admission and graduation. After you graduate, you'll complete your residency program through the American Board of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP requires that residents pass their board exams before they can practice in their specialty area—in neonatology specifically, this is called subspecialty certification or board certification in Neonatal Intensive Care Medicine (NICM).
How long does it take to become a Neonatologist
To become a Neonatologist, you’ll need to complete rigorous coursework and training. The average length of time required for medical school is three years. You can expect some hard work, dedication and patience along the way—but most importantly, you should have determination and intelligence in spades!
The field of neonatology is a highly specialized one, and it’s not for everyone. It requires an advanced degree and years of training in additional areas to become proficient. If you are interested in this field, we recommend that you pursue a residency program after your bachelor's degree instead of going directly into practice right away. This will allow you time to make sure this is really what you want before committing yourself fully. Good luck!
