Qualifications: To become a psychiatrist, one must earn an undergraduate degree in a field related to psychology or psychiatry, such as biology, chemistry, or a related field. Afterward, they must complete four years of medical school and an additional four to six years of specialized training in psychiatry. Psychiatrists must also obtain a medical license from their state's medical board.
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) estimates that there are approximately 45,000 psychiatrists in active practice in the United States. Of those, approximately 33,000 are members of the APA. The majority of psychiatrists (76%) are male, while 24% are female.
The median age of psychiatrists in the US is 53 years old. The average psychiatrist spends 8.4 hours a week seeing patients in their clinical practice. The majority of psychiatrists (87%) practice as solo practitioners, while the remaining 13% are employed by hospitals, medical groups, or other facilities.
In terms of location, the majority of psychiatrists (67%) practice in urban areas, while 17% practice in suburban areas, and 16% practice in rural areas. The states with the highest concentration of psychiatrists are New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
The most common type of psychiatric practice is psychotherapy (62%), followed by medication management (30%), and other services (8%). The most common diagnoses seen by psychiatrists are depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder.
