According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), there are approximately 46,000 psychiatrists currently practicing in the U.S. The APA also reports that approximately 75% of psychiatrists are male and 25% female. The average age of a practicing psychiatrist is 54 years old, with the majority being over 50.
In terms of ethnicity, 17% of psychiatrists are Asian-American, 15% are Hispanic-American, 14% are of African-American descent, and 54% are Caucasian.
Approximately 4% of psychiatrists are in solo practice, while the remaining 96% are employed by hospitals, universities, clinics, and other settings. The most common practice settings for psychiatrists are outpatient clinics (37%) and hospital/medical centers (35%).
In terms of educational background, the majority of psychiatrists hold a Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.), while the remaining percentage hold either a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.), a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), or a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.).
Finally, the median salary for a psychiatrist in the US is $200,000 per year.
