What Is Pulmonology ?

Pulmonology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the lungs, airways, and chest. It includes the medical management of asthma, cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung diseases, and lung cancer, among other conditions. Pulmonologists are specially trained to provide comprehensive care for patients with these conditions.

Pulmonologist: Roles, responsibilities, and qualifications

A pulmonologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diseases and conditions of the respiratory system, or lungs. These physicians diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and COPD. They may also perform diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, and lung function tests to help diagnose respiratory conditions.

The primary responsibilities of a pulmonologist include diagnosing, treating, and managing respiratory diseases and conditions. They may prescribe medications, order additional tests, and refer patients to other specialists or therapists. Pulmonologists may also perform surgical procedures to treat certain conditions, such as the removal of tumors or the insertion of a breathing tube.

To become a pulmonologist, a doctor must complete medical school and a three-year residency in internal medicine. After residency, they must complete a two- to three-year fellowship in pulmonary medicine. Specialized training in other areas such as sleep medicine, critical care, and interventional pulmonology may also be required. Board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine is also required for practicing pulmonologists.
