Pulmonologists may also perform surgical procedures to treat certain conditions, such as the removal of tumors or the insertion of a breathing tube.

To become a pulmonologist, a doctor must complete medical school and a three-year residency in internal medicine. After residency, they must complete a two- to three-year fellowship in pulmonary medicine. Specialized training in other areas such as sleep medicine, critical care, and interventional pulmonology may also be required. Board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine is also required for practicing pulmonologists.
