They may also perform reproductive surgeries and assist with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproductive techniques.
Reproductive Endocrinologists typically complete medical school, residency and fellowship training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. After completing their training, they must pass a certifying examination administered by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). They must also obtain a state medical license to practice medicine.
Reproductive Endocrinologists must also stay up-to-date on the latest advances in reproductive medicine and technology, as well as any changes in the laws regarding fertility treatment. They must also be able to communicate effectively with patients and other healthcare providers. They must also be knowledgeable about ethical issues related to reproductive medicine.
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, there were 8,669 reproductive endocrinologists practicing in the United States in 2020. The majority of these practitioners were female (76%), with the remaining 24% being male. The average age of these practitioners was approximately 45 years old. Approximately 40% of these practitioners were located in the South and the West, while 25% were located in the Northeast, and the remaining 35% were located in the Midwest. The majority of these practitioners (72%) were board certified, while 28% were not. The majority of practitioners (74%) had at least one additional subspecialty, with the most common being infertility (66%).
