A rheumatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating arthritis and other musculoskeletal diseases. Rheumatologists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of joint and soft tissue diseases, including autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and vasculitides. They also diagnose and treat conditions such as gout, osteoporosis, soft tissue rheumatism, and fibromyalgia.

The primary responsibilities of a rheumatologist include performing physical examinations and diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and providing education and counseling to patients on how to manage their condition and prevent further damage. Rheumatologists must stay up-to-date with the latest developments in their field and use evidence-based treatments to provide the best care possible.

In order to become a rheumatologist, a doctor must have a medical degree and complete a three-year residency in internal medicine. After completing the residency, they must complete a two-year fellowship in rheumatology and pass a board certification exam.
