The Surgeon General is the operational head of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the senior most officer of the U.S. Public Health Service. The Surgeon General's role is to protect and advance the health of the nation by providing leadership and direction to the nation's public health efforts. Qualifications: The minimum qualification for a general surgeon is a medical degree from an accredited medical school and successful completion of a residency program in general surgery. Additional qualifications may include board certification in general surgery, postgraduate research or teaching experience, and experience in a specialty field, such as vascular, pediatric, and transplant surgery.
