A General Surgeon is a physician who specializes in a wide range of surgical procedures. General Surgeons are trained to treat a variety of medical conditions from minor to major, including appendectomy, gallbladder removal, gastrointestinal surgery, and breast surgery.
The Surgeon General is the highest-ranking officer of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and serves as the nation's leading spokesperson on matters of public health. The Surgeon General’s duties include advising the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services on matters concerning public health and providing leadership to the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

General surgeons are responsible for diagnosing and treating medical conditions, performing surgery, providing patient care and education, and consulting with other medical professionals. They also evaluate medical images and laboratory results to assess patient health, and advise patients and their families about treatment options.
Qualifications:
In order to become a general surgeon, a person must complete an accredited medical school program and pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). After medical school, a person must complete a five-year residency program in general surgery and then pass the American Board of Surgery certification exam. General surgeons must also maintain a current license to practice medicine.
As of 2020, there are approximately 44,500 general surgeons in the United States. Of these, 63.2% are male and 36.8% are female. The average age of a general surgeon is 52 years old. The majority of general surgeons practice in metropolitan areas, with the most surgeons practicing in California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.
The majority of general surgeons are employed in private practice (47.5%), followed by hospitals (27.4%), academic medical centers (9.7%), and the military (2.2%). Approximately 5.1% of general surgeons are self-employed.
The average salary for a general surgeon in the United States is $367,000 per year. This figure can vary based on location, experience, and other factors.
