Venereology is the branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other related diseases. It involves the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and human papillomavirus (HPV).

In the 16th and 17th centuries, syphilis became widespread in Europe, leading to the establishment of the first Venereal Disease Clinic in London in 1862.
There are three main types of sexually transmitted infections: bacterial, viral, and parasitic.
Bacterial STIs include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. These infections are caused by bacteria that can be transmitted through unprotected sexual activity.
Viral STIs include human papillomavirus (HPV), genital herpes, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These infections are caused by viruses that can be transmitted through sexual activity or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding.
Parasitic STIs include trichomoniasis and pubic lice. These infections are caused by parasites that can be transmitted through sexual activity or close contact with an infected person.
The symptoms of STIs can vary depending on the type of infection, but common symptoms include:
Pain or burning sensation during urination can be a symptom of chlamydia, gonorrhea, or other bacterial infections.
Abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis can be a symptom of chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis.
Sores, blisters, or ulcers on the genitals or anus can be a symptom of syphilis, herpes, or chancroid.
Itching, burning, or irritation in the genital area can be a symptom of pubic lice or genital warts.
