Cardiologists also provide preventive care, including lifestyle advice, to help patients reduce their risk of developing heart and vascular diseases.
Qualifications
To become a cardiologist, one must complete a four-year undergraduate degree, a four-year medical school degree, and a three-year residency in internal medicine. After residency, cardiologists must complete a three-year fellowship in cardiology. Cardiologists must also pass an exam to become board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
The most recent statistics show that there are approximately 31,000 cardiologists in the United States. About 70% of these cardiologists are male and 30% are female. The average age of cardiologists is 50 years old. Approximately 70% of cardiologists have completed a fellowship, with the most popular subspecialties being interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and heart failure/transplant. The majority of cardiologists are employed by private practice groups, hospitals, and academic medical centers. The median annual salary for a cardiologist in the US is around $340,000.
