What is Cardiovascular Perfusion? 

Cardiovascular perfusion is a medical field that involves the maintenance of the circulation of blood and oxygen throughout the body during surgeries that affect the heart or other major organs. Cardiovascular perfusionists are specialized healthcare professionals who are trained to operate and monitor the heart-lung machine, which is a device that takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgeries. History of Cardiovascular Perfusion 

Cardiovascular perfusion has been an essential aspect of cardiac surgery since the 1950s when the first successful open-heart surgery was performed by Dr. C. Walton Lillehei. Prior to that, cardiac surgery was a risky and challenging procedure, as there was no way to keep the patient's blood and oxygen flowing while the heart was stopped. With the advent of the heart-lung machine, also known as the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, surgeons were able to perform complex procedures that required stopping the heart for extended periods.
