What Does a Perfusionist Do? 

Perfusionists are highly skilled medical professionals who work alongside cardiac surgeons and other healthcare providers during open-heart surgeries and other cardiac procedures. Their primary responsibility is to operate the heart-lung machine, which maintains the patient's circulation and oxygenation during the surgical procedure. 
Perfusionists also administer various blood products, such as platelets and plasma, to the patient during the surgery. They monitor the patient's blood pressure, heart rate, and other vital signs to ensure the patient's safety. 

Education and Training Required for a Perfusionist 

To become a perfusionist, you must have a bachelor's degree in a science-related field, such as biology or chemistry. You must also complete a specialized perfusion program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The perfusion program usually takes two years to complete and includes both didactic and clinical training. 

After completing the perfusion program, you must pass the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) certification exam to become a certified perfusionist.
