The History of Ophthalmology 

Ophthalmology has a long and rich history that dates back to ancient times. The first known ophthalmological text is the "Ebers Papyrus," which was written in Egypt around 1550 BCE. This text describes treatments for eye diseases, including cataracts and trachoma. 

In the Middle Ages, ophthalmology became more formalized, with the establishment of the first ophthalmology school in Salerno, Italy, in the 13th century. The first ophthalmoscope, a device used to examine the inner structures of the eye, was invented in 1851 by Hermann von Helmholtz.
