An otolaryngologist, also known as an ENT specialist, is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the ear, nose, and throat. They may also treat related structures in the head and neck, such as the sinuses and larynx. 

To become an otolaryngologist, a doctor must complete four years of medical school, followed by at least five years of residency training in otolaryngology. Some otolaryngologists may also complete additional fellowship training in a specific area, such as pediatric otolaryngology or head and neck cancer.

How Do Otolaryngologists Diagnose Conditions? 

To diagnose a condition, an otolaryngologist will typically start with a physical exam and medical history. They may also use diagnostic tests such as: 

• Hearing tests, to evaluate hearing loss or other ear-related issues 
• Nasal endoscopy, to examine the nasal passages 
• Laryngoscopy, to examine the voice box 
• Imaging tests such as CT scans or MRIs, to get a more detailed look at structures in the head and neck
