What is Physical Medicine? 

Physical Medicine, also known as Physiatry, is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, and other medical conditions that affect their physical abilities. It is a non-surgical approach to treating a wide range of conditions that can limit a person's mobility, function, and quality of life. 
Physical Medicine practitioners, also known as Physiatrists, are medical doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation. They work with patients to help them regain their physical abilities, reduce pain, and improve their overall quality of life. Physical Medicine encompasses a range of treatment techniques, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation medicine. 

History of Physical Medicine 

Physical Medicine has a long history that dates back to ancient times. In Greece, Hippocrates, the father of medicine, recommended exercise, massage, and hydrotherapy as a means of treating illness and promoting wellness. Similarly, in ancient India, yoga was used as a form of physical therapy to alleviate pain and improve physical function. 
In the modern era, Physical Medicine gained popularity in the early 20th century as a means of treating soldiers returning from World War I with disabilities. It has since evolved to include a wide range of techniques and approaches to treating physical conditions. 

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or PM&R, is a medical specialty that focuses on restoring function to patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, and other medical conditions. PM&R practitioners work to improve patients' abilities to perform daily activities and to manage their pain, while promoting overall health and well-being. 
The goals of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation include reducing pain, improving mobility and strength, increasing endurance, improving coordination and balance, and promoting overall wellness. Practitioners use a variety of techniques to achieve these goals, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation medicine.
