What is Rheumatology?

The History of Rheumatology 

The field of rheumatology has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. The earliest known written reference to a rheumatic condition is found in an Egyptian medical text from around 1500 BCE, which describes a condition similar to rheumatoid arthritis. In ancient Greece, Hippocrates described gout, and in the 19th century, Sir Alfred Baring Garrod identified uric acid as the cause of gout. It was not until the 20th century that rheumatology began to emerge as a distinct medical specialty.
