What is Interventional Cardiology?
Interventional cardiology is a subspecialty of cardiology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease using minimally invasive procedures. These procedures are done through small incisions or punctures in the skin and blood vessels, allowing doctors to access the heart and perform various diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Interventional cardiology procedures have revolutionized the treatment of heart disease and have significantly reduced the need for open-heart surgeries.
Procedures in Interventional Cardiology
There are several procedures that interventional cardiologists can perform, including:
Angioplasty and Stenting
Angioplasty is a procedure that involves widening a narrowed or blocked artery in the heart. During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted through a blood vessel in the groin or wrist and guided to the blocked artery. A small balloon at the end of the catheter is then inflated to widen the artery, allowing blood to flow more freely.
Stenting is often done in conjunction with angioplasty. It involves inserting a tiny metal mesh tube into the artery to help keep it open. There are two types of stents: bare-metal stents and drug-eluting stents. Bare-metal stents are made of metal and are less likely to cause blood clots, but they have a higher risk of re-narrowing of the artery. Drug-eluting stents are coated with medication that helps prevent the artery from re-narrowing, but they have a higher risk of blood clots.
Balloon Valvuloplasty
Balloon valvuloplasty is a procedure that involves widening a narrowed heart valve using a small balloon at the end of a catheter. The catheter is inserted through a blood vessel in the groin or wrist and guided to the heart valve. The balloon is then inflated to stretch the valve open, allowing blood to flow more freely. This procedure is often done as an alternative to valve replacement surgery.
Atherectomy
Atherectomy is a procedure that involves removing plaque buildup from the walls of arteries using a catheter with a rotating blade or laser at the end. The catheter is inserted through a blood vessel in the groin or wrist and guided to the site of the blockage. The blade or laser is then used to remove the plaque, allowing blood to flow more freely.
Septal Ablation
Septal ablation is a procedure that involves creating a small hole in the wall that separates the two chambers of the heart in order to improve blood flow. This procedure is often done as an alternative to open-heart surgery for patients with certain types of congenital heart defects or other heart conditions.
